Captain's Analysis: Swamp Fox

Had the 2nd choice of draft selection. CE picked first. I knew he planned to take Wurstmeyer, at which point I elected to pick 8th and have the back to back picks. Partly due to ease of pick selection, and partly to make myself somewhat veto proof. My plan was to then target some people I had not played with before but have wanted to, specifically merf and mith with my first 2 picks. Looking ahead I was projecting a chance to grab McGeeal in rd 3, which would provide outstanding ops support.

  • Pick 8 rd 1: I ended up taking Mith before Merf. I knew Dave had interest in Mith and if he vetoed I could take him at pick 1 in rd 2.
  • Pick 1 rd 2: Plan comes to fruition as I take Merf with my next picks, locking in the 2 targets I entered the draft hoping to acquire. Off to a good start.
  • Pick 8 rd 3: as we approached this pick I was looking at 4 players. McGeeal, who was my original target and who I felt was a lock for one of my picks if available. Tidnab, who I play with often and have a great deal of respect and trust. I knew he was willing to play any role and provide a great flex pick. Asanka, who kept falling in the draft due to time zone. He deserved to be gone by rd 2 at latest, but he presented an interesting steal of a pick this late. Manno, someone I heard was a great ops person, could sim, and I couldnt help but feel his history was similar to mine short of a lucky goblin round. I stuck to my plan and took McGeeal, who I viewed as a steal in this spot.
  • Pick 1 rd 4: Tidnab ended up being picked by Dave immediately before my pick, and with the veto now gone, I had no recourse to take him. I gave a lot of debate to Asanka or Manno, but in the end I went with the convenient time zone. Someone is going to get a steal in Asanka, but the fit seemed better with Manno. The pick was met with a mix of love and hate from Volv and Erix who regularly pack with him, I took this as great news. Also all 4 of my picks start with the letter M… I see a trend…
  • Pick 8 rd 5: was looking for a fast attacker, and aiming for DavetheGoliath but he went shortly before my pick along with several other attacker options I had on the list before my last pick. My double ops on the last turn has a price, but no regrets. Short of a traditional fast attacker, I wanted 2 attackers here to round out our firepower: Sharkey was one of the people still on my attacker wish list , and that fact really made this an easy decision. Honestly; he seemed like a steal here with a solid track record and I hear he’s an even better realmie. I just hope we can support him fully with the time zone difference.
  • Pick 1 rd 6: Blafiora is a player I don’t know a ton about but heard he’s an old time player with the skills to excel. That’s enough for me here in rd 6, let’s roll the dice. I’m Sold
  • Pick 8 rd 7: DISASTER!! I had this pegged as a new player I landed with this round, scruffier.hes been incredibly active, shows a desire to learn, and is a real life friend of someone else I drafted. It was perfect and no one knows who he is…. Except Wurst caught wind of him through an old friend and got CE to steal him from me! I found out later Cronel would have done the same, I never had a shot. Secrets don’t stay secret in dominion and I should have known better. I tried to work a trade with CE but no dice. I had to pivot and really wanted some extra ops support. Nauj I had been eyeing for a few rounds but his listing as low to medium activity was scaring me away. I’ve talked hockey with him before, seems a good guy, and I’ve heard good things. I had to do it. Immediately CE and Dan told me how much I suck and how big a steal I just got. They played with him this round and couldn’t say enough nice things. Losing Scruff hurt, but getting Nauj was a great find late in the draft.
  • Pick 1 rd 8: my last pick. I’m looking best available and I kept being pulled to one name, Exrio. Originally I also had MeeSAX on the list here, but he didn’t make it to me making this an easy pick. I’ve played with Exrio before and he’s a capable slow attacker/ops. I’m happy to bring in someone who can add that kind of value in rd 8.
